But sometimes, your clothes don’t come out as soft as you’d like, mostly due to traces of detergent and minerals in the water. Fabric softeners you buy at the grocery store can soften clothes, however, the cost of these products adds up and they often contain strong ingredients or odors. Instead, you can soften clothes with inexpensive products that you probably already have in your cabinets.

- 1 cup distilled white vinegar
- ½ cup baking soda
- ½ cup borax
Steps to follow:

Mix 1 cup of distilled white vinegar into the rinse cycle of your washing machine. Vinegar is non-toxic and dissolves alkaline detergent, which can make clothes feel stiff.

Add ½ cup of baking soda to the wash water, along with your regular detergent. Baking soda not only softens clothesbut also eliminates odors.

Soften hard water, which in turn softens clothes, by adding ½ cup of powdered borax to the wash water. Borax will also help brighten your whites and get make your clothes cleaner.

Use the correct amount of detergent. Follow the directions on the detergent bottle and use only that amount. Adding too much detergent to the wash can reduce the softness in clothes.
